Our 'Friendship & Responsibility' programs improve Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The Department of Education and Training, Victoria (DET) recognises the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom. Our 'Friendship & Responsibility' therapy dog program is a unique initiative designed to enhance SEL by equipping students with essential skills to build resilience, manage emotions, and foster meaningful relationships. By incorporating therapy dogs into the educational environment, we create a nurturing space where students can thrive both emotionally and socially.

The Role of SEL in Building Resilience

Social and emotional learning is a critical component of modern education, providing students with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges. SEL focuses on helping students manage their emotions, behaviours, and relationships, ultimately building resilience. Students learn empathy, patience, and understanding by engaging with our therapy dogs—key elements in developing strong emotional foundations.

Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)

Our program aligns with the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) framework, offering comprehensive learning materials for teachers in primary and secondary schools. These resources are designed to cultivate students' social, emotional, and positive relationship skills.

The RRRR framework covers eight essential topics of SEL:

  1. Emotional Literacy: Understanding and expressing emotions effectively.
  2. Personal Strengths: Identifying and leveraging individual strengths to build confidence.
  3. Positive Coping: Developing strategies to manage stress and adversity.
  4. Problem Solving: Encouraging critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  5. Stress Management: Teaching techniques to handle stress healthily.
  6. Help Seeking: Promoting the importance of reaching out for support when needed.
  7. Gender and Identity: Exploring self-identity and respecting diverse perspectives.
  8. Positive Gender Relationships: Fostering respectful and equitable interactions.

Our therapy dog program breathes life into the core principles of Social Emotional Learning, transforming them into heartfelt experiences that resonate with students. When students interact with our gentle therapy dogs, they embark on a journey of empathy, fostering genuine connections beyond their furry friends to their classmates. The comforting presence of these loyal companions in the classroom acts as a soothing balm, melting away anxiety and nurturing a newfound sense of confidence. With this support, students are empowered to dive deeper into their learning journey, embracing each moment with open hearts and minds.

Through guided activities and mentor-led discussions, students gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and develop the skills to navigate social interactions. This hands-on approach to SEL empowers students to become resilient, respectful, and emotionally intelligent individuals.
