A Day in the Life of Ebony
Ever wonder what it's like to spend a day in the life of a Canine Comprehension therapy dog? This is the story of Ebony, a therapy dog, and her devoted mentor, Sharon, as they spend a day at three different schools in the North of Melbourne. Let's delve into their journey, from discussing responsibilities and self-care to engaging in poetry activities and playful games of Jenga.
Session One: Responsibility and Self-Care
At the start of the session, students shared their moods and discussed their responsibilities as dog owners. Sharon led a conversation about the importance of caring for Ebony, emphasising the need for exercise, health, and regular vet visits. The students related these responsibilities to their lives, sharing challenges like walking energetic puppies or caring for siblings.
Afterwards, Sharon divided the group into groups for dog training exercises with Ebony while others practised mindfulness through shape breathing exercises. As the session ended, students eagerly helped pack up, giving Ebony warm pats before bidding farewell.
Session Two: Poetry and Play
Sharon began the second session of her day by introducing a poetry activity, which the students enthusiastically embraced. They shared personal anecdotes, like one student's upcoming bowling birthday party, fostering a sense of camaraderie and connection.
Transitioning to a game of Jenga, the students took turns answering questions with each block they pulled. Laughter filled the room as Ebony's wagging tail accidentally toppled the tower, prompting everyone to see the humorous side and declare it the best outcome. As Sharon wrapped up, the students eagerly requested another round of Jenga for the following week.
Session Three: Creating a Safe Space
Sharon and Ebony's final session for the day occurred at a Special Development School, where they helped create a calm and safe environment for the children. Following a routine, the students greeted Ebony with gentle pats, reinforcing the bond they had built with her.
Together, they discussed what makes Ebony feel calm and safe, reflecting on their emotions and coping strategies. Using coloured emotion cards, Sharon facilitated engaging discussions about feelings and mindfulness practices. The session concluded with mindful colouring, depicting Ebony's happiness at the beach, fostering a sense of tranquillity and positivity.
Ebony and Sharon's sessions exemplify therapy dogs' profound impact on students' well-being and learning experiences. They create a nurturing environment where students feel valued, understood, and supported through meaningful interactions, empathy, and companionship. As they continue their journey together, Ebony and Sharon inspire joy, connection, and resilience, making a difference one heartwarming session at a time.
