What students gain from our sessions.

For some students, school has become a place they brace themselves for. A calm, kind dog can change that in minutes, lowering stress, creating smiles, opening the door to trust, and making it feel safe to try again. That’s the starting point for learning, connection, and real growth.

But the dog isn’t the “magic trick”. What makes Canine Comprehension different is what happens at the other end of the leash: experienced mentors who know how to turn that connection into measurable progress. We work in small groups or one-to-one, with clear goals and consistent sessions that build momentum over time.

Students can:

  • Feel more motivated to come to school and more connected in the classroom
  • Build emotional regulation and wellbeing, improving learning readiness
  • Strengthen social awareness, communication, and social skills
  • Learn practical mindfulness tools to reduce anxiety
  • Grow confidence, pride, and willingness to try
  • Handle transitions and change with more ease

We care deeply about outcomes, not just moments. That’s why we use evidence-based practice and track progress, so schools can see the change and students can feel it.

What are mentors do:

  • Our mentors are the ones turning a lovely interaction into real, teachable change.
  • Our dogs help a student feel safe enough to engage; the mentor then uses that window to coach skills, guide reflection, and shape behaviour that transfers back into the classroom.
  • In sessions, mentors actively teach regulation. They notice early signs of stress or shutdown, name what’s happening in a calm, non-shaming way, and guide the student through practical strategies.
  • Mentors set clear boundaries and expectations, then coach students through the moment-by-moment interactions that are hard to practise in a busy classroom.
  • Mentors link it back to school goals. They tailor activities to the student or group’s needs, keep sessions structured, and track progress so the school can see what’s shifting. They’re not there to “bring a dog for a visit”—they’re there to build skills that show up in class, on the yard, and in relationships across the school community.

Helping young people feel better, so they can learn better.

For students who are experiencing anxiety, disengagement, or social–emotional challenges, a Canine Comprehension dog can act as a co‑regulating presence, helping downshift physiological arousal and increase readiness to engage. Global animal‑assisted education literature links structured, well‑supervised programs with reductions in perceived stress and anxiety, improved affect, stronger prosocial behaviour, and increased classroom engagement.

That’s why our sessions are not “dog visits”. They’re mentor‑led, goal‑directed interventions with planned skill acquisition and measurable outcomes, tracking changes in self‑regulation, social functioning, and learning participation over time.

Individual mentoring

For some young people, the hardest part isn’t the work, it’s walking through the door. They’ve often had too many experiences of being corrected, misunderstood, or left behind. So we start where change actually starts: connection. A calm Canine Comprehension dog helps lower pressure and provides the student with a safe way to engage. Our mentor builds on that moment by showing them, week after week, “I’m here, I see you, and you can do this.”

That consistency is the intervention. When the same mentor and dog keep showing up, trust grows. And once trust is there, goals stop being abstract. They become practical and personal: staying in the room when feelings spike, using a strategy before things escalate, asking for help, taking turns, reading cues, finishing a task, trying again after a mistake. Our mentors break those goals into small, achievable steps, then coach the student through real moments, celebrating progress, repairing setbacks, and building self-belief through lived success.

Over time, students don’t just “have a good session”. They start carrying the skills into the rest of their week. They learn that big feelings are manageable, relationships can be safe, and learning doesn’t have to hurt, in fact it can be fun and worthwhile.

Canine Comprehension Dog in Library

Library Sessions

So much of their lives is spent on screens and constant stimulation that some students stop seeing reading as a pleasure and start seeing it as pressure. Our school and library sessions bring the joy back by making literacy feel safe, social, and achievable. With a calm, non‑judgemental Canine Comprehension dog beside them, many reluctant readers take risks they’d usually avoid: reading aloud, sounding out words, asking questions, and sticking with a text for longer.

That enjoyment matters, and so does the academic growth that follows. As students practise more, confidence builds, and the foundations strengthen, leading to fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication.

Beyond schools: Therapy dogs at your workplace

Dog-assisted learning isn’t just for students!

Dog-assisted wellbeing isn’t just for students—adults benefit too. In high-pressure schools and workplaces, psychosocial wellbeing matters, and psychological safety is built through everyday moments of connection, calm, and support.

Dog for a Day caters for corporate environments too, creating those moments. It offers a gentle circuit-breaker that helps people downshift stress, feel more at ease, and connect with colleagues in a natural way, supporting a healthier, more psychologically safe workplace culture.

Bring Dog for a Day to your staffroom or workplace and feel the difference in team energy, morale, and connection.

Special Development Schools: Where every student can take part

Canine Comprehension has extensive experience working in Special Development Schools (SDS), where learning is highly individualised and often focused on communication, functional academics, social skills, and everyday life skills. We support students with complex needs, including mobility access requirements and a wide range of communication styles (including non-speaking students who use AAC, signs, or other multimodal supports).

We work in step with the school’s routines and support structures, partnering with Student Support Groups (SSGs) where appropriate, educators, families, and allied health professionals to understand each student’s needs and goals.

Sessions are structured, predictable, and flexible, designed to fit safely within specialist environments and accessible facilities.

In SDS settings, our Canine Comprehension dogs create a calm, joyful, respectful space where students can practise skills in the moment, connection, communication, self-regulation, and participation, at their own pace, with dignity and genuine enjoyment.

We understand diverse needs

Tailored program design and individualised goals

  • Programs and sessions are adapted to meet students’ unique needs and personal development goals (whether improving attention, reducing anxiety, or encouraging nonverbal communication, for example).
  • Accessible activities focus on tactile, visual, and emotional engagement.
  • Support for nonverbal students is provided with activities focusing on alternative communication methods.

Safe and positive therapy dog interactions

  • The nonjudgmental presence of a therapy dog helps students feel at ease and fosters emotional regulation.
  • Therapy dogs provide a bridge for communication through gestures, eye contact, and touch for students with nonverbal communication styles.
  • Therapy dog activities offer accessible, inclusive interactions for students with mobility challenges.

Emotional and social development

  • Calming interactions with the therapy dog teach students emotional regulation
  • Students develop social skills as they engage with the therapy dog, peers, and mentors, promoting empathy and teamwork.
  • Interactions with the therapy dog build students’ confidence and foster a sense of achievement and self-worth.

Evidence-based strategies

  • Our model is informed by research showing that interactions with therapy dogs can reduce ADHD symptoms, hyperactivity, and aggressive behaviours while improving attention, coping mechanisms, and overall wellbeing.
  • We utilise techniques that align with findings from studies like those by Lloyd & Sorin (2014), highlighting the benefits of animal-assisted learning for emotional and social skills.

Safe and ethical practices

  • Our therapy dogs are calm and responsive in diverse settings, including working with students who may have unpredictable behaviours.
  • Ethical treatment of our animals is a cornerstone of our practice, ensuring their wellbeing while they assist students.
  • We are affiliated with world-leading organisations, including the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO), attesting to our ongoing commitment to best practices in the field of animal-assisted learning.

Implementation in special development schools
